Born in Avranches, Paul-Armand Challemel-Lacour, after an early political career, was exiled until 1859 because of his opposition to the coup d'état of December 2, 1851, which brought napoléon III to power. After the fall of the second empire (September 4, 1870), he was named a prefect and elected a deputy to the National Assembly, where, with léon gambetta, he took a position against the monarchist coalition. Challemel-Lacour was named minister of foreign affairs in the cabinet of jules ferry (1883) and served as president of the Senate (1893). He was elected to the ACADÉMIE FRANÇAISE in 1893.
